Personality Research Lab Dalhousie University

Research

As the director of the Personality Research Team, I would like to let you know about several research projects we are presently completing:

  • We are examining the association between perfectionism and disordered eating (e.g., anorexia, binge eating, and bulimia); for example, we are investigating how perfectionism generates experiences (e.g., periods of depressive affect) that trigger episodes of binge eating or compensatory behavior
  • We are researching the role of perfectionism in social relationships; across various contexts and occasions, perfectionism is linked to conflict with others and alienation from others; we believe perfectionism is intimately tied to social situations (e.g., negative, conflictual social interactions), social cognitions (e.g., viewing others as unsupportive), and social outcomes (e.g., break-up of romantic relationships) conducive to depression

Although the above projects are our current foci, other projects and possibilities are available to members of the Personality Research Team (e.g., research on various forms of anxiety, suicide behaviors, and personality disorders). I am also pleased to support ideas and studies initiated by students.

Sincerely,
